An Important Silver-gilt Tray • Plateau en argent massif

Description / Descriptif :
A large and heavy silver two-handled tray of exceptional quality, with original light vermeil wash. The tray with a rich applied border of vine decoration, the handles fluted and with foliate decoration and the tray itself entirely covered with engraved foliate decoration except for an open small central oval.
Un grand et lourd plateau d'une qualité exceptionnelle, en argent massif avec sa couche de vermeil d'origine. Le plateau avec une bordure appliquée du décor de vigne, les poignées cannelées avec un décor de feuillage et le plateau est entièrement gravé d'un décor floral.

Dimensions : 75 x 56 cm (29 1⁄2 x 22 inches) - Maximum 88 cm (34 3/4 inches).

Further information / Renseignements complémentaires : While of unknown manufacture, this tray is of exceptional quality and unusually large. The design is truly nineteenth-century and both the workmanship and the engraved decoration is superb. Trays are usually silver-plated, this is solid silver. They are seldom this large One reason is that it is technically extremely difficult to make a large tray that stays flat.

Practically speaking it is for use on a table or sideboard, rather than for carrying around !
