Description / Descriptif :
A pewter broc à bière or beer jug, decorated with naturalist barley ears and hop branches motifs on a trompe l’œil barrel background.

Dimensions : 25cm H.
Maker / Orfèvre : Jules-Paul BRATEAU (1844 – 1923)
Place / Lieu : Paris, France.
Date : Model created in 1897.
Marks / Poinçons : Maker’s mark / Poinçon de Maitre : JULES BRATEAU / the multiple symbol of a man hanging by the neck.
Brateau's marks can be found on the underside.
Condition / Etat : Fine and untouched, with original patina.
Further information / Renseignements complémentaires : The Musée d'Orsay have six pieces by Brateau, including an example of the ' gui ' or ' mistletoe ' goblet, (though without the under-dish). The Metropolitan Museum in New York also have a number of gobelets by Brateau, though not this one, as well as an example of the (Briot inspired) ewer and tray.
