Further information / Renseignements complémentaires :
George Hossauer (1794-1874) made three copies of this item, after the design of Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1829.
The copies belonged to :
1) Herzog Karl von Mecklenburg (finished 7.2.1830)
2) Kaiserin Alexandra Feodorowna (born Prinzessin Charlotte von Preussen. (finished 16.6.1830.
3) Konig Friedrich Wilhelm III. von Preussen (finished 18.10.31 and missing).
Following the chronology it seems to be clear that this drawing, (dated 10 July 1830), is for the piece ordered by the Prussian king. The drawing is signed by Georg Hossauer himself, and above all gives a lot of technical information. It is not impossible that this is the drawing used in the workshop of the goldsmith.
The other two drawings are in museum collections in Berlin and Potsdam.
James Whatman was founded in Maidstone, Kent in England in 1740. By 1829 the company belonged to William Balston (Whatman’s apprentice, and later partner). It was regarded as one of England’s finest paper manufacturer of hand-made paper.
